As Bagel Ambassador, my job is to celebrate the bagel industry, create community for bagel lovers around the world—and ensure you’re eating the absolute best bagels out there.

This list is the culmination of thousands of taste tests over a decade of unrelenting bagel obsession. I rated hundreds of shops across 10 criteria, from bagel quality to cultural significance, and whittled them down to the 30 that truly stand out as the cream cheese-of-the crop.

WHO AM I TO JUDGE?

Claiming to have compiled “The Definitive Best” of anything in New York City is audacious. So, what qualifies me to do so?

First, I have an unrelenting love for bagels. I’ve eaten thousands of bagels from hundreds of shops, both in and outside of New York. This passion led me to found the New York BagelFest, the first festival in NYC history dedicated to celebrating bagels. What started humbly in 2019 has since grown into the premier trade and consumer show for the bagel community. In 2024, BagelFest was hosted at Citi Field, drawing nearly 2,000 bagel enthusiasts from around the globe.

In 2022, I left a cushy corporate job to make bagels my full-time life. Running Bagel Tours and Artisan Hands-on Bagel Making Classes means I spend nearly every waking hour talking about, studying, teaching, and promoting this incredible food and the culture behind it. My dedication has earned me the title of “Bagel Ambassador” and recognition as one of Brooklyn Magazine’s 50 Most Interesting People 2023.

In sum: This list is the result of years of hands-on experience, a deep appreciation for bagel culture, and a genuine passion for sharing what makes these shops special. I’ve done my homework—and plenty of taste testing—to bring you a thoughtful, informed guide to NYC’s best bagels.

  • This is a list of the Best Bagel Shops in NYC. While the bagel itself takes center stage, this ranking is about the full experience that makes a bagel shop unforgettable. Think of it this way: if I had one chance to show someone the magic of NYC bagels, this is the order of shops I’d take them to.

  • Only shops that make their own bagels are included. I’ve started mapping out the roughly 450 shops in NYC that meet this criteria, though it’s still a work in progress. Consider this a starting point for celebrating the city’s incredible bagel landscape.

  • This list was originally published as the Top 30 Bagel Shops in NYC in 2025. For 2026, I’ve refined it to my Top 18 based on consistency, quality, and current operations.

1. UTOPIA BAGELS

Utopia Bagels was founded in 1981 as a neighborhood establishment in Whitestone, Queens. They’ve become industry leaders thanks to their impressive operation that hand-rolls over 100,000 bagels per week, plus a dynamic online presence. After 40+ years exclusively in Queens, they recently opened a second shop in Manhattan.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Award-Winning Quality: A peak Utopia bagel is the best bagel I’ve ever had. It has a thin, crispy shell with a perfectly doughy interior. A 48-hour fermentation leads to a rich flavor, not too sweet and not too salty. Don’t just take my word for it, the experts agree: Utopia was crowned winner of the Best Bagel at BagelFest 2024, a blind plain bagel taste test among the best bagel shops in the world.

High-Volume Craftsmanship: Utopia hand-rolls over 100,000 bagels per week during peak season. Since their bagel rollers work for them full time (whereas most other hand-rolled shops employ freelancers), it helps ensure consistently excellent bagels, and means you can get a warm, freshly baked bagel at any time of the day - from 5am until close at 4pm (in Whitestone, at least). They have crazy high volumes because of a diverse mix of channels, from retail customers to wholesale clients like Freshdirect and a national audience via Goldbelly.

Media Powerhouse: Utopia Bagels has been spotlighted by BuzzFeed’s Worth It, Eater’s The Secrets Behind One of New York’s Best Bagels, and Action Bronson’s F*ck, That's Delicious, racking up tens of millions of views and gaining national and international attention. They’ve also grown one of the largest social media followings of any bagel shop on Instagram and TikTok, and even launched a dedicated podcast, “Not Just Bagels.” They’ve popularized many viral bagel motifs, including the “Knock Test” and giant pizza bagel.

Family-Owned Heritage: Utopia Bagels is operated by the Spellman family, helmed by Scott, a larger-than-life character, Katina the bedrock and foundation of the family, and their son Jesse, a social media savant. Since buying into the business a decade ago, the Spellmans’ leadership has transformed Utopia from a run-of-the mill neighborhood bagel shop into internationally recognized industry leaders. I believe the secret to their success is two-fold: they treat every single person who walks through their door like family, and at least one of them is in the shop working the front lines every single day.

Commitment to Tradition and Quality: Utopia excels in the details – for example, they’ve built enough walk-in space to ensure every bagel has enough time to cold ferment for 48 hours, and hand-slice their smoked fish (whereas most other shops get their fish pre-sliced). When it comes to distinguishing yourself from the best in the world, the little details add up to a big advantage.

Haters Will Say: The new location in Manhattan hits different. While it’s the same bagel (they are made in Whitestone and transported to the other location via refrigerated truck), it’s true the new shop's modern vibe is different from the OG location. If you’re a true breadhead, make the pilgrimage to Whitestone for one of the best bagel experiences you’ll ever have.

2. POPUP BAGELS

PopUp Bagels was founded in 2020 in Westport, CT. Born out of pandemic boredom by founder Adam Goldberg, in a few short years, PopUp has established themselves as one of the top bagel brands in the country. They have a unique business model centered around small batch, hot bagels that differentiates them from competitors while enabling them to expand rapidly

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Small-Batch, Hot Bagels: PopUp specializes in hot, small-batch bagels with a minimalistic approach that maximizes the best part of a bagel eating experience: eating a hot one right out of the oven. They are smaller and less dense than traditional New York bagels, which allows you to eat one without feeling too full (or several guilt free).

Streamlined Menu: They offer a simple menu of 5 bagel flavors and 4 spreads, and don’t make sandwiches. You buy 3, 6, or 12 bagels with pre-packed schmears (including a rotating weekly special), and are encouraged to “Rip, Grip, and Dip.” While this rubs some people the wrong way, it helps keep their operation incredibly streamlined and efficient so you’ll never have to wait too long. You can also pre-order to skip the line.

Buzz-Worthy Brand: PopUp Bagels has cultivated major social media attention and celebrity endorsements, too numerous to count. Highlights include investors like Hollywood film producer John Davis, actor Paul Rudd, athletes Michael Phelpps, Michael Strahan, and the Watt Brothers, among others. PopUp is an absolutely world-class hype and media machine.

Award-Winning Excellence: PopUp shocked the world when this unknown Connecticut popup shop won “Best Bagel” at the Brooklyn BagelFest in 2021, beating out dozens of iconic New York bagel institutions. Repeating as champions again at BagelFest 2022 proved that this was no fluke - they truly are among the best of the best.

Rapid Expansion and Funding: PopUp raised $8M in Series A funding in 2023 - unheard of for a bagel brand. They followed that up with an undisclosed Series B in 2024, giving them the firepower to focus on nationwide franchising.

Super Efficient Operation: In contrast to the traditional hand-roll, kettle boil, bake in deck ovens, PopUp poke a hole in a dough ball, boil in small pots, and bake in convection ovens on parchment-lined trays. This setup requires minimal footprint and upfront investment, which is helping enable their rapid expansion.

Curated Customer Experience: The branding has been meticulously thought out, from the packaging, to the shop design, to the clubby music. Their locations are designed with small front-of-house spaces that encourage lines - lines beget lines, after all - feeding the flywheel of buzz and demand.

Haters Will Say: Critics argue that PopUp’s emphasis on serving hot, fresh bagels is just a way to mask their flaws, with some even claiming that it’s not a “real” bagel. But to the haters, I say this: PopUp has cracked the code that a hot bagel equals a great experience, and they deliver on that promise with each bagel they serve.

3. ESS-A-BAGEL

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 9.1/10

Founded in 1976, the name "Ess-a-Bagel" is derived from the Yiddish word "ess", meaning "eat," so it literally translates to "Eat a bagel"! And eat a bagel we shall. Ess-a pioneered the big fluffy bagels that New York bagels are known for today.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Iconic New York Institution: Widely regarded as one of NYC’s top bagel shops, Ess-a-Bagel has become a go-to for tourists seeking a true New York bagel experience. This was the very first New York bagel I ever had when I visited the city at 16 years old, and is the bagel that made me fall in love with New York bagels. I know I am not alone. In the past few years, Ess-a has leveraged their brand to grow beyond their retail footprints in the city, now offering wholesale options, nationwide shipping through Goldbelly, and even making it into the Newark Airport.

Pioneers of the Big Bagel: Ess-a-Bagel is famous for its massive 7-8 oz bagels. Before Ess-a, the average New York bagel was 3-4 oz. Ess-a’s massive leap in bagel size helped popularize the bagel as a sandwich - a surprisingly recent development in the bagel’s history (retail bagel shops didn’t start selling sandwiches until the 80’s). Despite the size, they don’t sacrifice on taste, delivering that crunchy outside and malty, doughy interior New York bagels are known for. The impact of Ess-a-Bagel on the industry cannot be overstated, earning them a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2024 New York BagelFest.

Broad Media Recognition: Ess-a-Bagel is frequently featured in mainstream media, like the New York Times’s How Many Bagels Does It Take to Keep a Place in Business? adding to its reputation and iconic status.

Female Led, Family Business: In an industry dominated by men, Ess-a-Bagel’s CEO Melanie Frost has led their impressive growth over the past decade. Her cousin, Beverly, runs the original 1st Ave location.

Insider Tip: Each Ess-a-Bagel location has a secret “express line” if you’re only ordering bagels and cream cheese (no sandwiches). The best part? These tend to be the freshest bagels out of the oven.

Haters Will Say: bagels are only seeded on one side, they microwave their eggs, and its a tourist trap. The first point is a legit gripe. To the others, we say avoid the line with the above tip. Don’t go to Ess-a for an egg sandwich.

4. RUSS & DAUGHTERS

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.8/10

Founded in 1914 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Russ & Daughters is a legendary New York institution, celebrated for its classic Jewish appetizing foods and commitment to quality that spans over four generations. I won’t lie, I didn’t used to think their bagels were anything special, but recent encouragement from aficionados got me to visit again and I’m glad I did.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

A Century of Tradition: Established by Joel Russ and named in honor of his three daughters, Russ & Daughters is a pioneer in Jewish appetizing foods, specializing in smoked fish, caviar, and bagels with traditional spreads.

Iconic Menu: Known for its premium smoked salmon, hand-sliced to order, as well as an array of other classic offerings like herring, whitefish, and house-made cream cheeses. Their bagels, bialys, and babka are revered staples of New York’s culinary scene.

Legacy and Family-Owned: Now operated by the fourth generation of the Russ family, the business remains family-owned, with a deep respect for heritage and authenticity that has kept it a staple in New York City.

Cultural Icon: Russ & Daughters is a cultural icon, frequently featured in media from The New York Times to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. It’s also the only “appetizing” store to appear in the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Expansion with Integrity: Despite modern expansions, including cafés and a production facility, Russ & Daughters has retained its old-world charm. Each location preserves the essence of the original shop while adding a contemporary twist.

Online and Nationwide Shipping: With an expanded online presence, Russ & Daughters offers nationwide shipping, bringing their famous lox, bagels, and baked goods to fans across the U.S.

Commitment to Craftsmanship: They uphold traditional methods, from hand-slicing smoked fish to carefully sourcing the finest ingredients, including premium-grade salmon and custom-blended cream cheese. While known for their classic offerings, Russ & Daughters only began making their own bagels about 10 years ago as part of their thoughtful expansion, adding a new dimension to their heritage.

5. New ABSOLUTE BAGELS

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.7/10

EDITORS NOTE: These rankings were compiled before Absolute Bagels' sudden closure in December 2024. Their spot on this list remains as a tribute to their legacy.

Started by Sam Thongkrieng, a former employee of Ess-a-Bagel, Absolute Bagels has been an Upper West Side institution for over three decades. Many Upper Westsiders will fight to the death to defend its claim as the best bagel in the city.

LOCATION

Upper West Side, Manhattan

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

A True Upper West Side Staple: Anyone who grew up on the UWS will tell you Absolute is NYC’s best bagel spot - and they’ve got a case to make. They make relatively small bagels with a thin, crackly crust and a perfectly chewy interior, tossed (almost recklessly) into a big steaming pile of hot bagels, whose aroma envelops you when you get to the front of the line.

No-Frills, Old-School Vibe: Absolute Bagels sticks to the basics with a classic, no-frills approach. It’s cash-only, has no online ordering or website, limited social media presence, a pared-down cream cheese selection, and one dedicated location. I doubt that’ll ever change.

The Line: Peak times (e.g. weekend mornings) guarantee extensive lines, often stretching along the block. This line is notorious enough that when it unexpectedly switched directions from North to South a few months ago, it became a huge local story.

Haters Will Say: Some argue that the long weekend line isn’t worth the wait - and they’ve got a point. Few if any bagels are worth a 45+ minute wait in my opinion, so try to visit off-peak.

6. BAGEL PUB

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.6/10

Bagel Pub has great bagels, the best cream cheese selection in New York City, and plenty of locations throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, making them a solid contender. I was devastated to learn that they’re not actually a Pub—how cool would that be? Bagel shop by day, bar by night, serve leftover bagel chips and bagels as a bar snack. I digress…

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Exceptional Cream Cheese Selection: Bagel Pub’s gorgeous cream cheese display is so over the top it looks like a gelateria. The dizzying array of flavors—almost all of which I can personally vouch for, except for Cookie Monster—set them apart from other shops in the city.

Quality Bagels: Their bagels are fluffier than doughy, but not overwhelmingly puffy. It’s a quite nice textural balance that complements their diverse spreads.

Local Artistry: They've commissioned local artists to re-create famous artworks to be bagel-themed. Highlights include Van Goh’s Bagelflowers, Dalí’s Melting Lox, Leutze's George Bagelton Crossing the Delaware, and of course, da Vinci’s Bagel Lisa.

Must-Try Pairing: I highly recommend their pumpernickel everything bagel paired with one of their specialty cream cheeses. My favorites are the cucumber dill and za’atar. Most of the time I’ll order 2-3 ¼ lbs of cream cheese and a few bagels so I can mix and match.

Haters Will Say: The service leaves room to be desired. I’ve found this can be hit or miss depending on the location. Personally, I’ve found the staff are nothing but delightful at their Chelsea location, the starting location for our Classic NYC Bagel Tour.

7. BAGEL MARKET

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.6/10

Founded in 2020, Bagel Market is a rising star of the New York bagel scene. They finished top 3 up in BagelFest’s Best Bagel competition two years in a row (runner up in 2023, 3rd place in 2024). There’s nothing particularly flashy about them, but they make good bagels and sandwiches at reasonable prices.

Midtown West, Grand Central, Hell’s Kitchen, Financial District, Wall Street

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

BagelFest Honors: Bagel Market finished in the top 3 at BagelFest’s “Best Bagel” competition, a blind plain bagel taste test, for two consecutive years—taking runner-up in 2023 and third place in 2024.

Award-Winning Sandwiches: Their “Signature #1” sandwich—bacon and sausage egg and cheese on a bagel—was voted Best Sandwich in the Country in BagelUp’s 2024 Bagel Sandwich Smackdown.

Viral Social Media Fame: Bagel Market gained viral and mainstream media attention when TikToker “Rainbolt,” known for pinpointing locations from obscure images, identified Bagel Market as the source of what a wannabe gatekeeper claimed was the best bagel sandwich in NYC. The story even ended up in GQ: If You Post a Delicious Bagel Sandwich on the Internet, Do You Have to Say Where You Got It?

Hands-On Bagel Classes: Bagel Market serves as the host location for NYC Bagel Tours' Artisan Hands-On Baking Classes, providing a unique educational experience for bagel enthusiasts. Bagel Market’s Midtown location, which comfortably seats 50+, is one of the largest bagel shops in NYC.

Extensive Menu Beyond Bagels: With management’s previous background in deli’s, Bagel Market boasts a diverse menu that goes beyond bagels, offering a wide range of deli favorites, salads, smoothies, coffees, and the like.

Haters Will Say: If this place is so good, how come I’ve never heard of it? Well…that’s the point of this list.

8. LIBERTY BAGELS

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.5/10

Liberty Bagels earned its reputation as the “Home of the Rainbow Bagel,” - but it’s what they do besides the rainbow bagel that lands them on this list.

Midtown West, Midtown East, Financial District, Jackson Heights

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Master of the Rainbow Bagel: How did Liberty Bagels earn the moniker of “Home of the Rainbow Bagel”? After the inventor of the rainbow bagel, Scot Rosillo, was shut down by the New York State Tax authorities after it was revealed that he owed almost $1M in back taxes, Liberty Bagels made the astute move of scooping up their bagel roller and baker, Osiel Escobar. While rainbow bagels are virtually ubiquitous nowadays, Osiel has been making them longer and better than anyone in the world - thus making Liberty the home of the Rainbow bagel.

Award-Winning Bagels: Liberty was ranked #1 in Manhattan by Mike Varley, the man behind the most ambitious NYC bagel review project of all time, everythingiseverything.nyc (this won’t be the last time Mike’s rankings are referenced). They also won the Best of the Boroughs at Brooklyn BagelFest 2022.

Outstanding Cream Cheese & Vegan Options: Known for beautiful cream cheese displays, Liberty Bagels also offers the city’s best selection of vegan cream cheese, making it a go-to spot for all dietary preferences.

Dense & Doughy Bagels: Liberty’s bagels are dense and doughy, with the option to request a bagel “hot out of the oven” at the register—a feature you should take advantage of, as high volumes mean they bake all day long.

Must Try: The jalapeño everything bagel with avocado herb cream cheese is a standout combination. The fiery yet subtle kick of jalapeño, balanced with the creamy, cool spread of cream cheese and avocado, are a perfect complement.

Haters Will Say: Some argue the rainbow bagel is a gimmick, but I’ll say this: it’s not just about the rainbow bagels—all their bagels are delicious. And surprisingly, rainbow bagels (which, by the way, are not just plain bagels with food coloring, but have a sweeter flavor to them) are a fan favorite; over 60% of guests on our NYC Bagel Tours name the rainbow bagel with birthday cake cream cheese as their top choice.

9. TOMPKINS SQUARE BAGELS

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.5/10

Established in 2013 in the East Village, Tompkins Square Bagels quickly became a neighborhood staple known for high-quality bagels and impressive cream cheese displays.

East Village, Union Square

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

East Village Favorite: A top choice for NYU students and locals alike, Tompkins Square Bagels has built a loyal following, even counting Timothée Chalamet among its fans.

Focus on Quality & Ambiance: Owner Chris Pugliese, who came from the fine dining world, was one of the first to prioritize ambiance, decor, and service in a bagel shop—a standard we now expect but was rare at the time. Every shop is decorated with works from local artists. Chris is one of the nicest owners I’ve met in the industry, and his focus on service is exemplified by his saying: “We’re not in the bagel business, we’re in the happiness business.”

Unique Offerings: Known for creative sandwiches like “The Weezer”—bacon, chorizo, egg, cheddar, any cream cheese—which started as a joke to test how ridiculous of a sandwich hungover NYU students might order—and has since become a bestseller.

Master Roller Recognition: The shop’s bagel roller, Celestino García, was featured in a fantastic New York Times, This Man Makes 3,000+ Bagels by Hand Every Day.

Must Try French Toast Bagel: I used to be completely anti-sweet bagels. The TSB French Toast bagel single-handedly converted me. I recommend it with the triple berry cream cheese, although any of the sweet cream cheeses will do. For the best TSB experience, two bagels is a must—one savory, and one French Toast for dessert.

Haters Will Say: Critics argue that the long lines of hungover NYU students aren’t worth dealing with at peak times. Try to visit during off-peak hours for the best experience.

10. BROOKLYN BAGEL & COFFEE COMPANY

BAGEL AMBASSADOR RATING: 8.3/10

Known for serving some of the largest bagels in NYC, Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company delivers on size without sacrificing texture or quality.

LOCATIONS

Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Astoria

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Massive Bagels, Great Texture: Despite their impressive size, these bagels maintain a perfect texture and filling ratio, making them a standout for those who like their bagels big and fluffy.

Podcast with NYC Flavor: Brooklyn Bagel recently launched a podcast in collaboration with a New York Rangers player, Adam Fox, called “Bagels and Fox” adding a unique twist to their brand.

A Misnomer: Despite the name, Brooklyn Bagel has no locations in Brooklyn; you’ll find them only in Queens and Manhattan.

Crowd Favorite: While I haven’t had enough visits to form a strong personal opinion, every time I’ve gone, it’s been fantastic. Plus, I’ve heard enough trusted Breadheads claim it as their favorite that it earns a well-deserved spot high on this list.

11. SHELSKY'S

Established in 2011 by Peter Shelsky, Shelsky's of Brooklyn filled a void in the borough's culinary scene by offering a traditional appetizing shop reminiscent of classic New York establishments.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Brooklyn’s Premier Appetizing Shop: Shelsky's has become synonymous with high-quality smoked fish and traditional Jewish delicacies, earning a reputation comparable to the famed Russ & Daughters.

Innovative Bagel Flavors: Beyond classic offerings, Shelsky's offers unique flavors such as Szechuan peppercorn, salt & pepper, and pretzel, providing a distinctive twist on traditional tastes. The Szechuan peppercorn bagel haunts my dreams—in the best way possible.

Artisanal Craftsmanship: The dedication to quality is evident in their hand-rolled bagels and meticulously prepared smoked fish. Their roller was been featured in Gastro Obscura’s Meet the Indispensable Bagel Rollers of NYC.

Diverse Sandwich Offerings: Shelsky's menu extends beyond bagels, featuring a variety of sandwiches that showcase their smoked fish and deli meats, catering to a wide range of palates. A signature sandwich, the Great Gatsby, is pastrami-smoked salmon, honey mustard, horseradish cream cheese and thinly-sliced red onion on seeded rye.

Charismatic Ownership: Co-owner Peter Shelsky, a native New Yorker, brings a vibrant personality and deep passion for traditional Jewish cuisine. He is a "bialyhead" at heart: “Anything that’s good on a bagel is better on a bialy,” I’ve heard him say many times.

Haters Will Say: Expensive, small bagels. This is true, but they’re high-quality, traditional, and delicious.

Old-School Atmosphere: Back in the day, bagel shops consisted of no more than a few slabs of sheet rock and an oven. In that sense, Bagel Hole keeps things traditional with its minimalistic layout and brusque service. It’s a throwback to a time when bagels were simple, dense, and unpretentious.

No-Toasting Policy: Bagel Hole refuses to toast its bagels, a policy that stirred up controversy when former Mayor Bill de Blasio claimed his favorite was a toasted whole wheat bagel from Bagel Hole—a statement promptly called out as a lie. This is NYC’s second biggest political bagel controversy of the past decade, topped only by Cynthia Nixon ordering a fully loaded lox sandwich on a cinnamon raisin bagel (which did not take place at Bagel Hole, but is too relevant not to mention).

Bagel of Choice for Notable New Yorkers: Kathryn Garcia surged from polling last to runner up in the 2020 NYC Mayoral race after her favorite bagel order - from, you guessed it, Bagel Hole - went viral. The shop is also known to have supplied bagels to Russ & Daughters before they started making their own.

Brusque NYC Charm: The almost-comically rude service and strict no-toasting rule are all part of the experience (I dare you to try and snap a picture inside). As fans would say: it’s a feature, not a bug. It’s not a schtick, though—they’re really just that cranky.

Haters Will Say: Critics argue that the smaller bagels, refusal to toast, and gruff service are off-putting. But for those who appreciate an authentic New York experience, Bagel Hole is as real as it gets.

Established in 2019 by Ben Suh, a jeweler-turned-restaurateur, Between the Bagel came about almost by accident. When pandemic construction restrictions derailed Ben’s plans to convert a bagel shop into a Korean restaurant, he pivoted into the bagel business—and infused it with his own unique flair. Combining Korean flavors with New York’s classic bagel traditions, Between the Bagel offers one of the most authentically unique bagel experiences in NYC.

Korean-Inspired Bagel Creations: This is where tradition meets innovation. Their fusion sandwiches blend Korean ingredients with classic bagels, and are a must-try. Standouts include the "Seoul Meets Bagel" (SMB), featuring bulgogi, egg, cheese, kimchi, and spicy gochujang mayo, and the “Dank Ass Pork Sandwich” (DAPS) spicy Korean pork, mozzarella, grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, kimchi slaw, and gochujang mayo.

Signature Dishes: The menu includes other items you won’t find in a run-of-the mill bagel shop, like "Ben’s Balls," deep-fried panko-crusted rice balls filled with bulgogi, kimchi, and mozzarella.

Cultural Fusion: I’ve always said the bagel is the perfect canvas for culinary innovation, and Between the Bagel proves it. By combining Jewish and Korean culinary traditions, they celebrate the multicultural essence of NYC in every bite.

Community Engagement: The establishment has become a beloved spot in Astoria, in large part because of Ben’s standup comedian act from behind the counter. He’s almost always working the cash register and is not afraid to bust balls. So don’t be surprised if your delicious food comes with a side of (usually well-meaning) digs.

Haters Will Say: This is not your typical bagel joint. And you know what? They’re right. Honestly, great call from the haters. But that’s exactly the point.

14. APOLLO BAGELS

Apollo Bagels are the cool new kids on the block. Owner Joey Scalabrino incubated the concept at Leo, his sourdough pizza shop in Williamsburg, for several years before opening Apollo’s doors in spring of 2024. Almost instantly, the shop gained fame as TikTokers and Instagrammers declared it “the best bagel in New York.” The hype machine hasn’t slowed down since, and Apollo is quickly expanding around New York City.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

“California-Style” Bagels: Apollo Bagels makes high-hydration sourdough bagels with an open crumb, giving them a distinctly airy and crispy texture. They are best known for their aesthetically pleasing, open-faced sandwiches and relaxed, youthful atmosphere, which I call “California Style.”

Minimalist Menu: Their pared-down menu features just 3 bagels, 5 sandwiches, and a couple of drink options. The simplicity extends to the shop’s brand-focused, laid-back vibe, reminiscent of other modern concepts like 7th St Burger (one of Apollo’s financial backers).

Handcrafted & Small Batch: Each bagel is hand-poked right before they’re boiled in small pots and baked. I believe every order is still auto-toasted unless otherwise specified.

Trendsetter with Social Buzz: With a strong following on social media, and the first shop to successfully offer a California-style experience in NYC, Apollo has become a top destination for those seeking a trendy twist on the classic bagel experience. The lines are so long, in fact, that the landlord for their West Village location is threatening to evict them.

Haters Will Say: Critics argue Apollo’s offerings aren’t true bagels but rather bagel-shaped sourdough bread. And while the haters may have a point, the flavor and quality are hard to deny. I will say that their bagels have to be toasted and eaten almost immediately upon serving, or else the texture results in a leathery pull that becomes quite the jaw workout.

15. MARK'S OFF MADISON

Multicultural Appetizing & Jewish Baked Goods: Bagel Joint goes beyond bagels, offering a selection of Jewish baked goods, including bialys, babka, and challah.

The Willy Wonka of Bagels: Co-owner Will Sacks has earned the nickname “Willy Wonka” of the bagel world, thanks to his inventive flavor combinations and imaginative approach to bagel-making.

BagelFest Accolades: Bagel Joint made waves at their debut BagelFest, earning recognition as a Rising Star and taking home the award for Best Bialy.

Located in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe’s claim to fame is as the home of the za’atar bagel. This used to be my daily bagel on my commute into Manhattan.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Signature Za’atar Bagel: This shop makes all the traditional bagel flavors and cream cheeses, but the za’atar bagel stands out among the rest. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice with “an earthy, herbaceous flavor profile that gets a burst of tartness from lemony sumac and a toasty crunch and nuttiness from the sesame seeds” (Food Network). Most people I’ve shared this with love it, and it is a must-try item here.

High Praise from Connoisseurs: Mike Varley, the man who ate and rated 226 bagel shops on everythingiseverything.nyc, ranked this shop as #1 in Brooklyn. 

Ideal Location for a Park Hang: Situated near Prospect Park, it’s an excellent spot to grab a bagel before enjoying a day in the park.

Hater’s Will Say: Another spot that is a victim of its own popularity—it’s not worth the long line at peak hours. It’s on the pricier side, and last time I checked their menu doesn’t always display prices next to the items, which doesn’t engender confidence. I don’t go often since moving out of the neighborhood, and have heard the bagels have been inconsistent over the past couple years.

18. BO'S BAGELS

Established in 2017 by Andrew Martinez and Ashley Dikos, Bo's Bagels emerged from a home-based operation to address the lack of quality bagels in Harlem.

WHY THEY ARE NOTABLE

Kings of the North: Bo's Bagels has become a beloved spot in Harlem, offering bagels that many consider the best north of Absolute Bagels. They recently opened a second location in Washington Heights.

Traditional, Petite Bagels: Their bagels are smaller, denser, and perhaps crustier than the typical fluffy New York bagel. This results in a chewy yet crispy texture that appeals to traditionalists.

Unique Everything Seasoning: I’m a big fan of their everything bagel composition, which features a medium-high density of toppings on both sides, including black sesame seeds and translucent crystalline salt.

Surprisingly Good Blueberry Bagels: I’m not a fan of blueberry bagels—blueberries are better in muffins, and there are so many superior bagel flavors—but Bo's version stands out as one of the best. It has a balanced flavor that's not overly sweet.

Excellent Creativity: Winners of “Most Creative” at the 2022 BagelFest for their “Sushi Bagel,” a black and white sesame seed bagel with ginger wasabi cream cheese, smoked salmon, cucumber and avocado.

Haters Will Say: Some people I’ve recommended this shop to have reported inconsistencies in service and bagel quality. This makes me scratch my head because I’ve never experienced that—even when showing up anonymously—but apparently they’re not as consistent as one would hope.
